The first NEW signing announced for Guildford Flames

Published at 2:45pm 5th June 2019.

The Flames have come to terms with 22-year-old British Forward Owen Griffiths for the 2019-2020 campaign.  The 5’10”, 175 skater iced 62 games and recorded 4 goals and 16 points during his first full EIHL term with Milton Keynes Lightning last season. The former Great Britain Under 20 player spent the previous pair of terms at Premier and National League Peterborough Phantoms where he collected 29 goals and 48 assists across 96 starts.

“I’ve been speaking with Paul over the last few summers,” said Griffiths, “and found the timing this upcoming season to be perfect. I’m really excited to develop on from last season and play with some great players. Playing against Guilford was never fun but I’m sure playing for them will be. Can’t wait to get started.”

Including a handful of appearances with Cardiff Devils in 2013-2014, the Welsh national has played 67 games at the country’s top level in addition to more than 200 senior credits with Devils National League side, as well as Wightlink Raiders and Swindon Wildcats ahead of the back to back years at Phantoms.

Griffiths iced for GB Under 18s in 2013-2014 and was with the Bronze medal winning Under 20’s in 2015-2016 where he registered a goal in 4 world championship games.

“This was a great opportunity for us to get another quality, good skating young British player on our roster,” offered Head Coach Paul Dixon.

“Milton Keynes as a club last year had a lot of nights when injuries depleted their roster, but Owen benefited from that situation by getting a lot of quality ice time and playing in all kinds of roles and in higher leverage situations.”

“He really came along, and we think he can help us add some more depth to our forward units to hopefully help us be a better team this season.”

“Owen is a good start to the contingent of players we will have joining us for the first time this season and we are excited to have him on our side of the ice when the puck drops to start the new schedule.”
