Flames are through to playoff finals weekend

Clan v Flames 07042019AGP 21

Published at 9:54am 8th April 2019.

A couple of first period goals erased the Flames aggregate deficit and put them in front while Travis Fullerton recorded a shutout as the Flames added a pair of late empty netters to pick up a 5-0 Playoff Quarter Final Leg 2 road win for a 7-3 aggregate success over Glasgow Clan to propel themselves into the Playoff Final weekend at Nottingham.

It took less than 5 minutes for the Flames to erase the aggregate deficit when Jamie Crooks got the visitors on the board. Not long after that Ian Watters had his team holding a 2-0 lead, 4-3 on aggregate, and that is the way things stood through the opening stanza.

The middle period very nearly timed out with nothing on the offensive counts for either side, but a last minute Evan Janssen strike against the overall flow of play allowed Spectrum’s men to begin the final frame 3 goals to the good on the night, and 2 ahead on the combined tally.

In the position of being able to defend a 3rd period advantage, they did so successfully to force the trailing side to pull their netminder with 5 minutes to play.  Clan played nearly 3 minutes with an extra skater before Calle Ackered’s empty netter pushed the Flames to a 4 goal edge on the night and 3 clear on aggregate.  TJ Foster added another into the empty cage to complete the evening.

“It was truly a full team effort here tonight,” said Head Coach Paul Dixon. “Unlike last night, we were ready to go from the off, and luckily we were very quickly able to erase the small deficit and then put ourselves in front.”

“Regaining the lead that quickly was a real confidence boost and certainly put a bit more pressure on them.”

“Travis was really solid at the back at times when we were under fire to keep our lead and we had to have that tonight coming into a game where we could not afford to fall behind any further.”

“It’s another huge milestone for us to advance to the next round, and we are all pretty excited to be going to Nottingham next weekend as one of the trophy contestants.”
