3rd period rally lifts Flames over Stars

Published at 10:30pm 16th March 2019.

3rd period goals by Brett Ferguson and Jamie Crooks helped Spectrum’s men recover from a 2-1 deficit and turn the tide for a 3-2 home ice win over the visiting Dundee Stars.

Against the flow of play, and about halfway through the opening period, Fabrizio Ricci got things started when he slipped a loose puck across the line to give Stars the lead they would retain through 20 minutes.

Time was on short supply in the middle set when the Flames finally pulled it level thanks to a disrupted Stars zone exit effort that ultimately ended up on Kruise Reddick’s stick and he wired it past Pontus Sjogren for a 1-1 score.  The even affair was not on the board long, however.  Shortly thereafter Stars made sure they were up at the next break when Johan Andersson put them back in front a little over 3 minutes from period close.

3 consecutive penalties at the end of the 2nd and start of the 3rd had the Flames playing shorthanded for a good stretch before getting their first powerplay of the night. They didn’t manage to get anything on that one but shortly after it expired, and in the 51st minute, Brett Ferguson squared it at 2 each.  A 2nd powerplay put them in their first lead of the contest when Jamie Crooks re-directed a TJ Foster feed at 52:46 and that one turned into the evening’s decider.

“I thought in the 1st period to be down a goal when we were was not really a good reflection of the way things were at that time,” offered Assistant Coach Milos Melicherik.

“When you tie it like we did then find yourself down yet again right away, it can be a tough situation, but mentally this team handles that stuff well and there was not going to be any quit, and they showed that in the 3rd.”

“We were able to hang in there and make it happen for us, so it was a good show of perseverance to get a win.”
