flames vs blaze 2601

Ben Davies was around the net all night and had a couple of goals and a helper as the Flames held on to a late lead to nail down a 4-3 home ice win over Coventry Blaze.

Kevin Noble got things started for Blaze about halfway through the opening frame, but Ben Davies finished off an outside drive to even the score  at a goal each at 14:27 and Kruise Reddick one timed a John Dunbar feed just 4 seconds from period time to give the Flames lead at the break.

Just over 6 minutes into the 2nd, Ben Lake pulled Blaze back to even terms, but inside the last 2 minutes another moment of determination to get in front by Davies was rewarded with the lead through a couple of frames.

In the last half of the 3rd, the home team bought themselves some insurance when Davies’  shot rebounded to TJ Foster who slipped the 4th across the line.  Turned out the extra one was needed because while shorthanded in the 57th minute Justin Hache had Blaze back within a goal to set up a nail-biting finish. Blaze took Matt Hackett from the net for an extra skater with more than a minute to play, and a Davies penalty 16 seconds from the end had Blaze up a pair of men, but in the end Spectrum’s tenants held tight to the single goal win.

“Tonight, we got scoring from all around the line-up, with every line scoring at least once,” said Head Coach Paul Dixon, “and whenever you can achieve that you give yourself a very good chance of winning.”

“We are in a really tight race with Coventry for a playoff spot and table positioning altogether in terms of a very closely bunched group from about 4th to 10th so this was an important set of points.”

“Coventry are a very good side and we are happy to have come away with a very big win tonight ahead of a long journey tomorrow to Glasgow.”
