Surrey sign second South African Elgar

Surrey County Cricket Club have signed South African batsman Dean Elgar for the first half of the season.

The top order batsman joins following the signing of his former Proteas team mate Morne Morkel.

Elgar will be available for Surrey till the end of May, before he leaves to rejoin his national side for a tour of Sri Lanka.

He said he was "grateful" to be back with the team.

Elgar said: "I hope to contribute for the period I am at the club, on and off the field, and I'm looking forward to seeing all involved at the great club again."

This is his second spell at Surrey, having previously made three appearances in 2015.

The 30 year old has 49 test caps to his name, averaging 42.58.

Elgar is currently ranked 8th in the ICC Test Batting Rankings.

He played a key part in South Africa's recent win series victory over Australia, where he became the second batsman in history to bat through an entire innings three times.

He is level with West Indies legend Desmond Haynes as the only two men to have carried their bat three times.

Surrey's Director of Cricket, Alec Stewart, said: "Given the news that Mitch Marsh will need ankle surgery, to be able to bring someone of Dean's calibre to the club, at such short notice, for the first period of the season is a real bonus.

"We know Dean well after his time with in 2015 and his international quality and experience will be a real asset."

The county had been searching for another overseas player following Mitch Marsh's injury in March.

Surrey's county campaign begins on April 20th, with a home game against Hampshire.
