Guildford to welcome royalty for Lacrosse World Cup

Guildford will welcome royalty this afternoon for the start of the 2017 FIL Rathbones Women’s Lacrosse World Cup.

HRH Princess Anne, the patron of English Lacrosse, will be at the Surrey Sports Park for the opening ceremony which gets underway at 4:30pm.

This is followed by the tournament's first match when hosts England take on Wales.

This year will be the tenth FIL Rathbones Women's Lacrosse World Cup and the third time England has been the host.

The first women's Lacrosse World Cup was in 1982 and held in Nottingham, in 2001 it was held in High Wycombe.

England have never won the competition but have come second on two occasions; in Australia in 1989 and Scotland in 1993.

The United States are the current holders after winning their seventh title in 2013.

Who is playing in the 2017 competition?

25 nations across five will battle it out for a place in the final.


When and where will the matches take place?

It is all being held at the Surrey Sports Park across four separate pitches. The first game between England and Wales is on Wendesday 12 July and the final on Saturday 22 July.
