Double defeat for the Flames

Skinns Jan 1st

10:36am 2nd January 2017
(Updated 1:51pm 2nd January 2017)

After losing 4-2 away to the Swindon Wildcats, they were beaten 3-1 in front of a home crowd at the Spectrum.

At Swindon, Jan Kostal opened the scoring for the wildcats at 7:40. The Flames were unable to capitalise on a 'Cats major penalty shortly thereafter, including its evolution to a short 5 on 3 chance near the end of the original 5 minute infraction.

Swindon doubled the difference on a powerplay early in the 2nd, making good use of their 5 on 3 opportunity. A little over the midway mark, however, David Savage had his team just a goal adrift ahead of the final stanza.

That situation only lasted 19 seconds into the 3rd when Phil Hill re-stored the 2 goal cushion and Stevie Whitfield made it a 4-1 gap a few minutes later. Maslonka bagged a powerplay goal 8 seconds from time to complete the scoring record with no change to the final result.

In the 2017 opener, after a wide shot advantage failed to give Bison a lead in a scoreless opening frame, they got the breakthrough they were seeking early in the 2nd with a Ciaran Long powerplay strike. The home team responded with a powerplay of their own a few minutes later when Tom Duggan was on target to knot the game at a goal each, but a late period Ivan Antonov strike had the Bison ahead again to start the 3rd.

Antonov added another in the 47th minute to extend their advantage to a pair. The Flames best chance to pull closer was with a full 2 minute 5 on 3 powerplay about 6 minutes from time, but they were unable to push one over the line to shrink the gap.

Speaking after wards, Head Coach Paul Dixon said: "After a very good run in which we got points from almost every game over 11 or 12 starts, it's disappointing to go over the New Year stretch with nothing to show in back to back nights.

"It is not an excuse, but we had some tough circumstances losing Tuomas Santavuori early at Swindon and then Marek early on Sunday.

"In addition to the defeats we clearly now have some significant roster concerns that hopefully are not as bad as they look at the moment.

"We need to use our return to a regular training and game schedule routine this week as a chance to re-set, and see where our roster is at as we prepare for Manchester and Milton Keynes."
