Two goals from Gateshead's Ryan Bowman in the last thirteen minutes condemned Aldershot Town to a 2-1 defeat on the opening day of the new National League season.

News Shots manager Barry Smith's first competitive game in charge got off to a great start when Rhys Browne converted Sam Hatton's cross from close range to give the home side an early lead after 20 minutes.

Aldershot failed to hold on to their lead in front of a crowd 1749 and debutant Bowman hit the post with 15 minutes to go, before scoring twice in three minutes to seal the three points for Gateshead.

Smith's side will have an opportunity to respond quickly when they travel to Cheltenham Town on Tuesday (11 August) night.
