Photos show Surrey Fire and Rescue tackling a large lorry fire on the A3 near Thurley.

Four engines were called to the scene at around 3.30pm this afternoon (31 July).

The road is shut in both directions as the fire spread to the grass verge, the Hindhead Tunnel is shut as a result.

Surrey Road Police tweeted an update this evening:

"The fire is out! Yay!

"Unfortunately the fire was so ferocious that it badly damaged the road.

"We‘re working on the worst case scenario of the Southbound [carriageway] remaining closed overnight.

"The northbound should reopen in 3-4 hours."

They are also urging people not to travel south on the A3 past Guildford or north past Liphook as traffic will be gridlocked and with the heat, people could suffer medical issues if they get stuck.
