Surrey Road Police and Surrey Fire and Rescue are currently on the scene of a large vehicle fire on the A3 near Thursley.

The road is now closed in both directions, as the fire has reportedly spread to a grass verge.

Traffic is being diverted via the A31 and A287.

Police say due to the size of the fire it may take some time to be extinguished and then an assessment on the condition of the road will need to be made before it can safely re-open.

They are urging people not to travel south on the A3 past Guildford or north past Liphook as traffic will be gridlocked and with the heat, people could suffer medical issues if they get stuck.

A spokesperson for Surrey Fire and Rescue Service told Eagle Radio they were called to the scene at around 3.30pm.

They confirmed a lorry had caught fire and that four engines were sent.

Firefighters remain at the scene, and we are being asked to avoid the A3 between Hindhead and Guildford area.
