Aldershot mum hits the £1 million jackpot

Published by Lettie Buxton at 6:00am 11th July 2020.

A mum-of-four from Aldershot, who has been helping spread a little joy to frontline workers during the coronavirus pandemic, received her own joy when she revealed the £1,000,000 top prize on a National Lottery scratchcard.

Alongside home schooling, 46 year-old Debbie Goolding has also found time to knit and deliver angels as a surprise gift for frontline workers with community group, Rushmoor Angels.

She said that "not in my wildest dreams while knitting or on the Angel Run delivering did I think that I’d be the one receiving £1m worth of cheer".

The millionaire adventure began on Saturday (4 July) when Debbie and her husband Joseph, aged 38, a heating engineer, went to the shops to pick up a birthday card for a friend.

Debbie wanted to head to the nearest shop but Joseph was keen to take his new car for a spin so they set off for Tesco on Wellington Road in Aldershot.

Debbie told Eagle Radio about the moment she found out that she had won:

"I came home as a regular Saturday as I would really - had a nice dinner with my husband and went and had a long soak in the bath.

"It was Independence Day so we were watching that while lying on the sofa.

"I went through and thought, 'oh, I've got my card, I'll go and get it'.

"So, went off and got my little card and rubbed it off while sat on the edge of the sofa.

"I got to the bottom and thought 'oh, I haven't won', rubbish.

"All of a sudden on the second-to-last row I scratched off a lucky 12, now it is for me, and it said 'one mill' - it didn't even have the zeros, it just said 'one mill' - and I thought 'I've won'!

"I've played those cards before and I do win quite a lot of those sorts of cards, you know £10 or £20 here and there.

"So when it said that, I knew it was legit as soon as I saw it.

"I couldn't believe it - I was thrilled!

"I was just excited and over the moon.

She added the money has given them "financial security".

They will be spending some of their winnings on a new car for Debbie, a big family holiday to make up for their break which was cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and Joseph is looking into a property development project.
