Surrey charity launches campaign with message "homelessness is closer than you think"

A Surrey charity has launched a new virtual campaign amidst the coronavirus pandemic, with the message that "homelessness is closer than you think".

Transform Housing and Support, based in Leatherhead, has launched its 'door2home' campaign in a bid to raise funds and awareness of homelessness in the county.

It comes as the charity is unable to host one of its major fundraising initiatives - the Corporate £50 Challenge - because of the COVID-19 outbreak.

David Annand, corporate and community fundraiser at Transform Housing and Support, told Eagle Radio:

"What COVID-19 has brought home is the isolation issues that we are all experiencing to some degree, but with homeless people that's a constant issue.

"So I think we've all had a taste of what that isolation can feel like.

"think now's a good time for people across Surrey to actually make a difference to help people who are in a less fortunate situation than themselves.

"I think everybody can relate to it and can say 'well yes, in different circumstances that could've been me or that could've been a member of my family or somebody that I know'.

"So it is close to all of us, closer than we would probably like to think so I think it's up to all of us to make a difference if we can."

To take part, people should:

  • Create a simple sign which has '#door2home campaign' or '#homelessness is closer than you think' written on it
  • Take a photo of yourself sitting or standing in front of your doorway while holding the sign
  • Post the photo to social media with the message: 'Only the width of a door stands between me and my bed, bath, cooker and TV – or being #homeless. I’ve taken a photo in front of my door and donated to the Transform Housing and Support #door2home campaign because #homelessness is closer than you think.'

The charity is asking those taking part to tag their social media channels:

  • Twitter: @transformhs
  • Facebook: @transformhousing
  • Linkedin: @Transform Housing & Support
  • Instagram: @Transformhousing

Donations can be made on the JustGiving page.
