Surrey probation officers still protecting the community during coronavirus pandemic

Published by Lettie Buxton at 6:00am 13th June 2020.

Probation officers across Surrey are continuing to keep the county's streets and communities safe during the coronavirus pandemic.

Officers aim to reintegrate offenders into society, using treatment interventions and increasing protective factors, such as employment, housing and supportive relationships.

They have carried on helping and monitoring offenders in the community amidst the outbreak, keeping them on track and preventing reoffending.

A number of measures have been introduced across Her Majesty’s Prison & Probation Service to ensure safety during the COVID-19 crisis, including stopping all non-essential contact.

This means probation officers have been having regular check-ins with offenders via telephone and video calls, though for more serious offenders, officers are still required to meet them in person under social distancing measures.

As well as helping to protect the community, this level of monitoring is also said to be appreciated by many offenders who are seeking extra advice and support.

Surrey probation officer Chloe Adams said:

"We are working hard to ensure offenders have the correct level of monitoring, through regular phone calls and, as stated, we’re meeting more serious offenders in person.

"We’re also using the time to give offenders every chance to turn their lives around and cease reoffending.

"I have Facetimed many offenders, providing a more personal appointment and also giving me a unique insight into their day-to-day lives – something that I’d not have been able to obtain through office appointments alone."
