Dads take on virtual half marathon in Chobham for key workers during COVID-19 pandemic

Published by Lettie Buxton at 6:00am 6th June 2020.

A group of dads is set to take on a socially distanced virtual half marathon around Chobham in support of key workers during the coronavirus pandemic.

The Waist Management team will be taking on the challenge on Saturday (20 June) and aim to raise £2,000 for mental health charity Mind, which has a branch in Woking.

It is one of several charities to have joined forces to launch Our Frontline, which offers round-the-clock one-to-one support.

One of the men taking on the challenge, Rupert Woodcock said they will use a shotgun start:

"So the route that we've designed around Chobham basically takes in as many front doors of the runners as it possibly can.

"We will start in front of our homes, or as close to our homes as we possibly can, at the same time and then we'll all run the route, ending up at our own homes.

"The personal challenge of running a half marathon is one thing and that's really good for each of the individuals that are running it.

"But, I think the bigger challenge for us is raising awareness for frontline workers and the mental strain that the COVID-19 epidemic will have taken on them post-virus.

"We want to help them as much as we can."

Waist Management was set up in January as a social way for the men to get fit.

They continued to train individually for a half marathon throughout the lockdown, before developing it into a charity challenge.

Donations can be made on the group's JustGiving page.
