Surrey Police close roads as people flock to beauty spots

Published by the Eagle Radio News Team at 6:24pm 25th May 2020. (Updated at 6:32pm 25th May 2020)

Surrey Police had to block off roads today near some beauty spots as people headed out in the sunshine in their droves.

Officers were seen closing access to roads near Frensham Great Pond, where people could be seen sunbathing and swimming through the day.

Virginia Water was also reported to be busy.

Police said there were reports of parking on clearways and vehicles blocking driveways and cycleways.

Waverley Police's Facebook page said earlier:

"It's been very busy at Frensham Ponds today, so busy that we have had to shut the roads to help maintain social distancing and emergency access. The road closures will be in place for some time yet.

"Please use common sense when following the guidelines."

Another post on Waverley Police's Facebook page said officers would be giving out tickets:

"Another busy day in the sunshine at #Frensham Ponds - with more reports of people not parking with any consideration for others. Cars are blocking driveways and cycleways and parked up on the verges and clearway.

"If the car park is full, the location is full! The local policing teams are patrolling and will be giving out tickets. Please park sensibly!"

Officers were also ticketing in Virginia Water where there were also reports of cars blocking driveways and cycleways, and parked on verges.

A post on Runnymede Police's Facebook page said they would be patrolling the area:

"Another busy day in the sunshine at #VirginiaWater with further reports of people not parking with any consideration for others.

"Cars are blocking driveways and cycleways and parked up on the verges and clearway.

"The Runnymede Borough Council enforcers and local policing teams are patrolling and will be giving out tickets."

It comes during the first bank holiday weekend following an easing of lockdown restrictions on 11 May, when Boris Johnson announced people could go out and sunbathe, exercise outdoors as much as they like, and drive to any area of England, to any destinations such as parks and beaches.
