Rubbish strewn over Surrey beauty spot

Published by the Eagle Radio News Team at 7:00pm 21st May 2020.

Parts of Newlands Corner were left covered in litter yesterday (20 May).

The Surrey beauty spot has proven popular since the lockdown restrictions were eased, leading to rubbish bins overflowing.

Images posted on social media showed waste including bottles, plastic bags and a disposable barbecue on the ground.

A Surrey County Council spokesperson said:

“We always want to keep our countryside looking clean, and we clear rubbish away as quickly as we can.

“However, if bins are full, we urge residents to be considerate and take their rubbish home with them.

“Due to COVID 19, our contractors have had to deal with significant backlogs of work and working restrictions, but are now catching up with the work.”
