Families reunited by surprise drive-by visit at care home in Surrey

Around 30 families have been reunited with their loved ones at a care home in Surrey while adhering to social distancing.

Residents at Gracewell of Bookham in Leatherhead were surprised by a drive-by visit on Monday (18 May) after 9 weeks apart.

Families were allowed to sit and chat in the care home's car park as long as they stayed at least two metres apart.

Eagle Radio spoke to home admissions advisor Vicky Radmore who said it was a touching moment:

"It was lovely to see.

"It was very emotional - a lot of our residents didn't know - we wanted to keep in a surprise.

"They were just visibly elated.

"There were lots of tears, lots of laughter and just lots of happiness."

Several families decorated their cars with posters and banners with messages of love and support for the care home residents.

Vicky says the whole team pulled together to make the afternoon memorable and they are hoping to hold another drive-by visit soon:

"Whilst we're really proactive with video calls and updates to families you know it's not the same as that face to face contact.

"I think it has just lifted everybody's spirits.

"Fun was had by all - it was a really good afternoon."
