West Byfleet youngster rows distance of English Channel in support of NHS staff during coronavirus outbreak

Published by Lettie Buxton at 3:04pm 12th May 2020.

A nine year-old boy from West Byfleet has been rowing the equivalent of the English Channel to raise money for NHS Charities Together amidst the coronavirus pandemic.

Sebastian Hannington was inspired by the efforts of Colonel Tom Moore, who has raised more than £32 million for NHS charities.

He has been using his mum's rowing machine to complete 37 kilometres by his 10th birthday on 24 May.

Sebastian is aiming to raise £1,000 in support of frontline NHS workers tackling the COVID-19 outbreak.

So far, he has received more than £900 in donations.

Speaking on The Peter Gordon Breakfast Show this morning, Sebastian's mum Danni Hannington said:

"He's done fantastically well.

"We set a challenge of a month because he decided to do it on 24 April.

"I wasn't entirely sure if he'd manage to get all 37 kilometres done.

"But as of yesterday he's at 34 and hopes to finish it today [12 May]."

Donations can be made on Sebastian's JustGiving page.
