Surrey war veteran shares his account of VE Day

A World War Two veteran from Surrey has shared his story to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day today (8 May).

Spelthorne resident and centenarian, Martin 'Bill' Sykes was 19 years old when he signed up to fight in the days following the outbreak of World War Two in September 1939. 

He has shared his account of VE Day as part of a series of virtual events being hosted by Spelthorne Borough Council today.

Bill went on to serve in the Royal Air Force for some 30 years, until 1969.

Born in Sheffield, he moved to Spelthorne with his wife when he left the air force and soon became involved in the Ashford Royal British Legion in 1976.  

Over the years he has organised 43 Remembrance Services for them and retired last year following his 100th birthday.
