Flood alert issued for parts of Hampshire

Published by the Eagle Radio News Team at 1:29pm 29th April 2020.

The Environment Agency is warning of the risk of groundwater flooding in the Alton area.

It follows recent wet weather with levels above normal for this time of year, remaining high in Farringdon, in the Alton, Chawton and Lower Farringdon area.

The EA said communities could be affected in the next few days, with the chance of levels rising again if the area receives more rainfall.

Low-lying land and roads are at ongoing risk of flooding - and because of the nature of groundwater behaviour, the risk could continue for several weeks or longer.

It is one of eight alerts issued in Britain were forecasters predict a week's worth of rainfall in 24 hours.

The forecast is for rain this afternoon, drying up later, but returning before midnight.

Tomorrow starts off dry, but scattered, heavy showers will develop from mid-morning with a risk of hail, thunder and gusty winds, and highs of 15 °C.

The wet and cooler weather follows highs of 25 °C last week and the driest April on record since 1938.
