Coronavirus: Over a third of Surrey and Hampshire care home deaths linked to COVID-19

Published by the Eagle Radio News Team at 12:48pm 29th April 2020.

Surrey and Hampshire care home providers reported 266 coronavirus-related deaths within a fortnight.

The figure, which makes up almost 36 per cent of all care home deaths in the counties during the two weeks to 24 April, comes from data published by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and Office for National Statistics.

It is based on care home providers' assessment of whether COVID-19 was involved in a resident's death.

It may or may not correspond with a medical diagnosis, or be mentioned on the death certificate.

Across the same period there were 11,772 care home deaths reported in England, of which around 37 per cent (4,343) were linked to coronavirus.

Kate Terroni, CQC's Chief inspector of Adult Social Care, said:

"Every death in today's figures represents an individual tragedy for those who have lost a loved one - and for those who cared for them.

"We will continue to support care home managers as they do everything they can to keep people safe, but it is clear that more support is needed, from every part of the system, as social care staff go to extraordinary lengths to protect those in their care."

Yesterday (28 April) the Health Secretary announced that the government was going to start publishing the number of daily coronavirus-related deaths from those in care homes and the community and not just in hospitals.

Matt Hancock also said that testing for the virus would be expanded to all care home residents and staff in England - regardless of whether they have symptoms.

Of the 266 deaths involving COVID-19 reported in care homes in our area, 121 were in Surrey and 145 in Hampshire.

The overall care home deaths for Surrey and Hampshire during the fortnight to 24 April were 351 and 396 respectively.
