Surrey Police won't clap for carers outside hospitals anymore after safety and social distancing concerns

Published by the Eagle Radio News Team at 7:17pm 22nd April 2020.

Surrey's police force says it will no longer mark the weekly 'Clap for our Carers' outside the county's hospitals.

Last week officers joined firefighters and paramedics in a 'blue light serenade' to show appreciation for NHS and health staff.

However the move attracted some criticism from those saying it was putting lives at risk and contravening social distancing rules on public gatherings.

In response, Surrey Police said it would continue to mark the clap for carers, but would do so in the community rather than outside hospitals.

The force's Assistant Chief Constable, Ali Barlow, added the 'blue light serenade' had been a boost to their NHS colleagues, but had also led to members of the public attending.

Surrey Police Assistant Chief Constable Ali Barlow's statement in full:

“Last Thursday’s #BlueLightSerenade in Surrey (part of the #ClapForCarers) was an uplifting event for all present to demonstrate the overwhelming support of the emergency services for the NHS workers at the front line of treating Covid19 patients.

“This week, Surrey Police will be marking the #ClapForCarers within the community.

“All officers who are on duty, and not actively responding to a call, are being encouraged to join in the #ClapForCarers in as many residential streets as possible, joining the public in showing our support.

“Last week’s event saw a phenomenal turnout, which we know was a real boost to our NHS colleagues.

“However recognising the need for safety during this pandemic and because many members of the public came to see the serenade, Surrey Police will bring the serenade to the communities and mark this weekly occasion.

“All the Blue Light Emergency Services across Surrey are united in our determination to show support for our NHS colleagues and will continue to mark the #ClapForCarers each week”.
