Over £10,000 raised after blaze at Effingham Village Supermarket

Published by the Eagle Radio News Team at 2:22pm 22nd April 2020.

A fundraising page setup after a fire at the Effingham Village Supermarket and Post Office has raised more than £10,000.

The online fundraiser was launched after the blaze at the building in The Street yesterday afternoon (21 April), with the view to helping it to continue to serve the local community.

In the page's description the store is said to be "relied upon by nearby residents" during the coronavirus pandemic, with the importance of local convenience stores emphasised by the lockdown restrictions.

Work is now underway to find the store a temporary location to operate from.

Fire crews were called to the scene yesterday, with seven fire engines sent to tackle the flames.

A spokesperson for Surrey Fire and Rescue Service said there were no reports of any casualties.
