Surrey residents warned of phone scam that claims you have to buy a face mask

Published by Grace Mcgachy at 2:26pm 21st April 2020. (Updated at 7:21am 22nd April 2020)

Surrey residents are being warned about a phone scam which claims you have to buy a face mask because of government advice.

Buckinghamshire and Surrey Trading Standards say that this is just a way for fraudsters to get your money and personal details.

There have even been reports that the phone calls are coming from local numbers but Trading Standards have explained they are 'spoofed' to look that way.

In a post on Facebook Buckinghamshire and Surrey Trading Standards described the phone call some residents have been getting:

"We have reports of residents being telephoned out the blue with the caller saying that 'the Government are advising that you don't go out without a mask, if you wish to purchase one press one'

"This is not the case at the moment.

"Hang up and don't part with financial info."

What is the current advice regarding masks during the COVID-19 outbreak?

The government is carrying out a review into the usefulness of masks in preventing the spread of infection.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) says there is no evidence to support their use by the general population.

Scientists are meeting to look at the evidence but we do not expect any imminent decision.
