"You are not alone": Guildford befriending charity reassures people during coronavirus lockdown

Published by Lettie Buxton at 12:00am 21st April 2020.

A Surrey charity supporting people through loneliness and isolation say they are still here to help during the coronavirus lockdown.

Community Angels is run by the Guildford Town Centre Chaplaincy, which also runs Street Angels, and works with adults of all ages to combat loneliness and isolation.

Volunteers usually visit people in their homes, but the service is now being provided via telephone, in line with the government's guidance for people to stay at home.

Rachel Guilford, project co-ordinator at Community Angels, said loneliness affects everyone:

"You're not alone, we want to be alongside you in whatever you're facing and we're happy to listen.

"We are all in this together and we are here to help make connections with other things that are going on in the community as well.

"Don't wait until it's a crisis, don't wait until things are really bad.

"We all have difficult times, you don't have to think 'I'm a burden' or 'things are worse for someone else'.

"We all need each other."

To speak to one of the community angels, call 07825 799309.

Rachel confirmed the best time to contact them  is between 12pm and 2pm, Monday to Friday, but you can leave a message outside those hours.

Anybody who wants to volunteer and become a community angel can do so by calling the same number, or emailing gfd.communityangels@gmail.com .
