More than 37,000 pieces of PPE donated in Surrey after urgent appeal

Published by Grace Mcgachy at 6:00am 19th April 2020. (Updated at 12:51pm 20th April 2020)

After an emergency appeal from Surrey County Council, 37,000 pieces of personal protective equipment have been donated.

Businesses and individuals have given things like gloves, hand soap and visors to the frontline staff currently fighting the coronavirus.

As the nation faces unprecedented demand for PPE, there is a very limited supply coming into the county for social workers, care home staff, firefighters and volunteers, with understandably the NHS being prioritised.

Leader of Surrey County Council Tim Oliver says since the appeal was launched they have received hundreds of emails offering to help.

He appeared on the Eagle Radio Breakfast Show this morning (20 April) where he explained that there can never be too many donations of PPE:

"We can't get enough to be honest with you.

"We accept that there is a national shortage of PPE and there probably will be for the forseeable future.

"So really our ask is for anyone who can help to provide as much support as they can.

"Aprons and gowns and masks those are the things that are really under pressure not just within the NHS but within all frontline services.

"This is a call out to art and textile schools, sewing clubs and classes and indeed to inividuals in their own front rooms."
