Fire breaks out in wooded area in Surrey Hills

Firefighters have put out a blaze which broke out last night (9 April) on Holmbury Hill near Peaslake.

They were called to the wildfire in the wooded area in the Surrey Hills just after 8pm.

Surrey Fire and Rescue Service confirmed there were no injuries, and that 1.5 hectares of undergrowth had been destroyed by the flames.

Two fire engines, alongside four wildfire vehicles and a water carrier, attended.

SFRS are also warning the public against starting bonfires this bank holiday weekend.

They say with the dry and warm weather there is a greater risk that they can get out of control.

They also say while it is not illegal is "anti-social".

"With the dry and warm weather arriving, the risk of wildfire increases and it only takes a moment of carelessness to start a fire.

"Most wildfires are caused by people and can be avoided.

"Please stay home and don’t start fires.

"If you do see a fire, always call 999."
