"Please, if your child is really unwell, bring them to hospital" says senior Surrey nurse

Hospitals in Surrey are reassuring parents and carers that they can still bring babies and children in to get treatment.

Many families may have concerns about visiting A&E during the coronavirus outbreak.

The Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust, Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and the Royal Surrey say that they are taking precautions to keep patients safe.

A spokesperson for the Royal Surrey has thanked residents for their appropriate use of A&E so far:

"Parents and carers are really heeding the advice to not use emergency paediatric services for minor issues in their child’s health and to stay at home where possible.

"However, the safety and wellbeing of your child remains our absolute priority and we would like to remind parents and carers that they must still seek the appropriate advice and help with any medical concerns.

"Most importantly, in the case of serious accident, emergency or if your child is very unwell or deteriorating, you must bring them to A&E or dial 999 as you would usually.

"The team will be here and ready to care for your child – please do not delay."

Jane Dickson is the chief of nursing and midwifery at Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust, which is responsible for East Surrey Hospital:

"We want to tell all parents and carers that if your baby or child is significantly unwell, please bring them to hospital.

"We understand the concerns that parents and carers have about the spread of coronavirus (many of us are parents and carers too) and we want to advise and reassure everyone that we are taking all precautions necessary to continue to protect and provide safe care to all of our patients.

"Our fantastic team of nurses and doctors are here to help you.

"Please, if your child is really unwell, do not delay (especially if they have an underlying medical condition), bring your baby or child to the hospital for medical care.
