Call for virtual volunteers to 'Adopt a Grandparent' in Surrey

Published by Lettie Buxton at 9:58am 28th March 2020.

A Surrey-based care home group is calling for more virtual volunteers after digitising its 'Adopt a Grandparent' campaign amidst the coronavirus crisis.

CHD Living, which has homes in Chertsey, Hindhead, Guildford, Godalming, Haslemere, Byfleet, Bagshot, Laleham-on-Thames and West Molesey,  launched it to continue providing elderly residents with companionship.

The campaign, which originally saw CHD Living pair elderly residents from across their care homes with local children and adults who don’t have or see grandparents of their own, is now welcoming new applicants from across the UK as ‘virtual volunteers’.

Virtual volunteers will provide remote companionship via regular video calls with residents, with each CHD Living home receiving a Facebook Portal TV to facilitate communication and interaction.

Drawings, letters and poetry from the public are also being welcomed as part of the initiative to brighten residents’ days, with the group looking to get as many children involved as possible during current school closures.

Shaleeza Hasham, head of hospitality, communications and commissioning at CHD Living, said:

"Some of these volunteers will feel very lonely themselves.

"So this is a really perfect opportunity to form mutually beneficial, long-term relationships that will support mental health wellbeing and also an opportunity for our generations to learn from each other.

"It genuinely brings a tear to my eye and warms my heart that people are willing to be so selfless and give up their time to support the vulnerable people within our community."
