Can I walk my dog? And other questions about lockdown in Surrey and Hampshire

Published by Grace Mcgachy at 2:47pm 24th March 2020.

Every mobile phone has received a text this morning from the government for the first time ever.

It says "new rules in force: you must stay at home" and follows the Prime Minister's announcement last night that the UK's effectively in lockdown.

However, the news rules may leave many Surrey and Hampshire residents with questions about their own individual situation.

What am I allowed to leave the house for?

You should only leave the house for one of four reasons.

  • Shopping for basic necessities, for example, food and medicine, which must be as infrequent as
  • possible.
  • One form of exercise a day, for example, a run, walk, or cycle - alone or with members of your
  • household.
  • Any medical need, or to provide care or to help a vulnerable person.
  • Travelling to and from work, but only where this absolutely cannot be done from home.

What if I share custody of my child who is under 18 with my former partner?

  • Where parents do not live in the same household, children under 18 can be moved between their parents’ homes

I volunteer to help the elderly/vulnerable, can I still do that?

  • Yes. Under the new lockdown rules, helping a vulnerable person counts as part of a medical reason to leave the house.

Which shops can remain open?

  • Supermarkets and other food shops
  • Health shops, pharmacies including non-dispensing pharmacies
  • Petrol stations
  • Bicycle shops, home and hardware shops
  • Laundrettes and dry cleaners
  • Garages and car rentals
  • Pet shops
  • Corner shops
  • Newsagents
  • Post offices
  • Banks

Can I take my dog for a walk?

  • As people are only allowed to exercise once a day dogs should be taken for walks then
  • Ideally should not take somebody else's dog out to ensure social distancing

How long will these new rules be enforced for?

  • The government's going to look at whether to change them in three weeks' time.
