Coronavirus: More than 200 confirmed cases in Surrey and Hampshire as Prime Minister issues a Mother's Day warning

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Surrey and Hampshire has risen to 224 as Boris Johnson says people should not visit their mums today.

The prime minister has warned the number of coronavirus cases is "stark" and "accelerating" and says the best present we can give our mothers for Mother's Day is to stay away.

In a blunt Mother's Day message, the prime minister said an elderly or vulnerable mother was much more likely to die from coronavirus - and it was impossible to "sugar coat" the threat.

The latest figures, released by Public Health England today, show 156 confirmed COVID-19 cases in Hampshire and 68 in Surrey.

The information does not specify exact locations.

Overall the UK has seen a total of 5,683 recorded cases of the virus – so far 135 of those patients have recovered.

In total, across the UK, 281 people diagnosed with COVID-19 have died.
