Coronavirus: South Western Railway reduces services

Published by Carol Musgrave at 12:59pm 20th March 2020. (Updated at 1:05pm 20th March 2020)

South Western Railway are running a reduced service from next Monday (23 March) following a drop in demand during the coronavirus outbreak.

The operator says the move comes after the government’s announcement urging people to avoid all but essential travel during the current crisis, to help prevent the spread of Covid-19.

Numbers overall for all rail operators are are down around 70%  - but they say they will still continue to run "core routes."

SWR says more staff are having to self-isolate for 14 days.

It says cutting back on the number of trains means they "can can focus on ensuring a reliable timetable for passengers who still have to travel, especially healthcare professionals, police and fire service workers."

It is also urging other passengers to follow the latest government advice and only travel if necessary.

Services are already being affected ahead of the scheduled changes on Monday because of last minute cancellations due to staff being unavailable.

SWR is offering refunds in certain circumstances, including on single, return and weekly tickets, as well as season tickets - find out more here.
