Woking's HG Wells centre closes for good

Published by Lettie Buxton at 5:02pm 18th March 2020.

The HG Wells Conference and Events Centre in Woking has had to close its doors prematurely amidst the current coronavirus crisis.

It was set to shut in July as part of the town centre redevelopment.

The closure is one of a number of actions being taken by Woking Borough Council to minimise the risk to staff and the public in light of government advice.

This year's Celebrate Woking programme of events and activities, which includes Party in the Park and the Woking Food and Drink Festival, has also been cancelled.

The only event which remains scheduled is Remembrance Sunday on 8 November.

Both of Woking's theatres - The New Victoria Theatre and Rhoda McGaw Theatre - are now closed.

In a statement, the council said:

"Underlying what we do is the safety and well-being of the community and the safety and well-being of our staff in meeting the needs of local people.

"Whilst we aspire to ‘business as usual’ the reality is that it cannot be."
