Coronavirus: Surrey hospital confirms first death in the county

Published by the Eagle Radio News Team at 12:09pm 16th March 2020.

The first death at a Surrey hospital of someone who had contracted COVID-19 has been confirmed.

The man in his 80s was admitted to Epsom Hospital with underlying health conditions but later tested positive for the coronavirus.

35 patients who have tested positive for the virus in the UK have died.

Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust also said a man in his 60s who was being treated at St Helier Hospital in Sutton had died after contracting COVID-19.

The hospital says their thoughts are with both the men's families.

Chief Executive of Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust, Daniel Elkeles, said:

“Sadly, we can confirm that a man who was being cared for at Epsom Hospital, who was in his 80s, and a man being cared for at St Helier Hospital who was in his late 60s, have died.

“Both patients were admitted with underlying health conditions and subsequently tested positive for COVID-19.

“The families have been informed and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time.

"We will not be commenting further and ask that everybody respects the family’s privacy.”
