Dominic Raab responds to suggestions he could have coronavirus

Published by Local Democracy Reporter Rebecca Curley at 4:25pm 11th March 2020.

Dominic Raab has responded to suggestions he should be tested for coronavirus, by saying he already has been and it came back negative.

Esher and Walton’s MP was unexpectedly trending on social media during the Budget speech in Parliament because scores of people noticed he was coughing, with some joking on Twitter that he “looked a bit peaky”.

Mr Raab responded to say his repeated coughing was the “tail end of a cold” and that he had “already tested negative for coronavirus”.

A number of people also questioned why he appeared to be coughing into his hand despite NHS and government advice being to cough or sneeze into a tissue.

However he responded by simply saying: “I did have a tissue.”

There were plenty of tongue-in-cheek comments on Twitter including from @sausages_two who rather brutally asked: “Anyone else hoping @DominicRaab has coronavirus?”

In the Budget speech the government outlined its plans to fund the fight against coronavirus.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak unveiled a £12 billion war chest to get the UK through the outbreak, including £5 billion for the NHS and £7 billion to help businesses and workers.

Meanwhile Nadine Dorries became the first British MP to test positive for coronavirus.

The Conservative MP for Mid Bedfordshire is also the Minister for Patient Safety, Suicide Prevention and Mental Health in the Department of Health.
