Expansion plans for Fleet school approved

Published by Local Democracy Reporter Maria Zaccaro at 5:08pm 28th February 2020. (Updated at 5:10pm 28th February 2020)

Plans to expand a Hampshire school have been given the green light.

A two-storey block which will provide 16 new classrooms will be built at Calthorpe Park School in Fleet as part of a £9.18m investment.

The secondary school in Hitches Lane currently has 1425 pupils.

But an expansion is needed to provide 300 new school places in order to meet future demand.

The site will see 13 general teaching classrooms, two technology rooms, a new dining area and offices, 30 parking spaces including some for buses and minibuses and 30 spaces for bicycles.

The new building will be built at the site of the former leisure centre which has now been demolished.

Along with the new building, there will be outdoor spaces created for students to take their breaks, including an outside dining area and amphitheatre.

The plans have now been approved by Cllr Roz Chadd, executive member for education and skills at Hampshire County Council.

“I am very pleased to approve this investment which will allow the school to extend its accommodation and continue to serve Fleet families.

"This financial support reinforces our firm commitment to provide a school place for every Hampshire child.”

Work is expected to start during the summer term 2020, with the new building set to be ready by Summer 2021.

The school will remain fully operational throughout the planned works, the county council said,  with contractors working closely with the school to minimise the impact on teaching and learning.
