Surrey beauty salon says goodbye to gossip magazines after the death of Caroline Flack

Why this Surrey salon is saying goodbye to gossip magazines.

Melissa Cobbett owns the Maple Tree Beauty Salon in Bagshot and has made the decision to no longer provide publications that she describes as negative.

She says the magazines are filled with: 'pages and pages of negativity, fat-shaming, shaming celebs with no makeup and much more.'

Melissa told Eagle Radio the death of Caroline Flack played a big part in the decision.

The former Love Island host took her own life earlier this month.

Melissa said in a Facebook post last week:

"We standby other salons & businesses that have decided to stop fuelling toxic publications.

"A lot of other celebrities have been a victim of the media in recent years.

"This was a normal girl, living her version of a normal life.

Instead of gossip Melissa wants to promote kindness and positivity:

"Over the last few years, I've really felt like women constantly put each other down.

"We need to put crowns on each other and big each other up rather than picking each other to pieces.

"It's a small step but I just felt it was a step that needed to be made."

Customers are more than welcome to bring any magazine they like with them- including gossip magazines.

Melissa says the Maple Tree Beauty Salon will now only supply positive magazines providing personal growth, decor, food, fashion, hair inspiration, health and wellbeing.

"We just want to try and help clients take those problems off their shoulders.

"So by getting rid of the magazines and talking to our clients, which we did anyway but by not having the gossip magazines I hope it will help clients look at things in a different way."
