Firefighters called to Guildford town centre following "strong smell of burning"

Surrey Fire and Rescue Service say a fire alarm in Guildford town centre was a false alarm.

Five appliances attended the scene in Onslow Street, with a service spokesperson saying a "strong smell of burning" had been reported.

The incident caused heavy traffic in the area.

Guildford Incident

A Surrey Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said:

"We received a call this afternoon around 12.55pm to a report of fire alarm sounding at The Friary, Onslow Street, Guildford. 

"Four fire engines were sent alongside an aerial ladder, and these arrived at the scene around 13.05pm. 

"A fire alarm had been sounding however it was a false alarm.

"The units left the scene around 13.30pm."
