Residents campaign to keep Hampshire day centre open

Published by Grace Mcgachy at 6:00am 22nd February 2020.

Residents are campaigning to save what they describe as a vital facility in Hampshire.

Frogmore Day Centre in Yateley could be closed down.

It allows older people in the community to have social contact with others and serves those with Dementia, Alzheimer's and other mind limiting conditions.

Local residents say the current charity that runs the centre has been struggling with 'structural issues', and the decision may be taken to close the charity at the end of March.

Matthew White has been taking his mother-in-law to the centre for several months and is one of those campaigning to keep it open:

"The staff are fantastic and the clientele.

"You just spend half an hour there and you realise these older people that have got mind limiting illnesses, there's still a person underneath there with a sense of humour.

"It's just amazing.

"My mother-in-law is a different person because she has somewhere else to go and sit and spend time with other people and she's quite far advanced in her dementia now and it [the centre] does make a huge difference to client's lives and their carers."

The Centre is funded by the fees paid by clients, both self-funders and social care referrals.

Councillor Liz Fairhurst, Executive Member for Adult Social Care and Health says Hampshire County Council is working on alternatives for those who currently use the service:

“We understand that the future of Frogmore Day Centre is currently being considered by the Trustees.

"In the meantime, our priority is to ensure that we continue to provide support to everyone whose day care we fund, and we are working closely with our provider Age Concern Hampshire to ensure alternative, suitable arrangements are made for our clients, should the need arise.”

A Crowdfunding page has been set up to raise the funds required to facilitate a change of Trustees and to support the charity financially.
