Farnborough woman nearly loses £20k to scammers

Published by Grace Mcgachy at 3:08pm 20th February 2020.

Police in Farnborough have stopped a woman from losing £20,000 to scammers.

The victim was instructed to travel to several bank branches in a taxi, to withdraw large amounts of money at a time.

She was told that the bank was under investigation by the National Crime Agency and therefore to lie to the bank and say that the money was for her son.

£20,000 was sent late last night in a bank transaction (19 February).

Farnborough Police stepped in to stop the woman from losing the money:

"Our quick intervention today upon hearing this has resulted in the receiving account being frozen with the £20,000 still in situ.

"This should be recovered and sent back to the rightful owner very shortly.

"Further safeguarding measures have been put in place to prevent further incidents and a further visit is planned for next week just to make sure she's okay."
