Amazon Prime scam in Surrey

Published by Carol Musgrave at 1:37pm 14th February 2020. (Updated at 1:39pm 14th February 2020)

Surrey Police say there are reports in the county of a scam where people receive automated calls impersonating Amazon in order to access personal information.

The force says if you receive these calls you should contact Action Fraud -  the UK’s national reporting centre for fraud and cybercrime, including phone scams.

Action Fraud says the scam involves an automated caller telling the recipient that fraudsters have used their personal details to sign up for an Amazon Prime subscription.

They are then told to "press 1" if they want to cancel the purchase.

When they do this, they are automatically connected to criminals posing as Amazon customer service representatives who then try to remotely access the victim's computer to steal personal and financial details.

Action Fraud says it has received 500 reports so far with over £1m stolen in total.

It issues the following advice:

  • Never install any software as a result of a cold call.
  • In the event of unwarranted approaches, contact companies directly using a known email or phone number.
  • Have the confidence to refuse requests for personal or financial information - don not be embarassed.
