Police have issued a warning after "sickening images of wild birds enduring agonising deaths" have been shared on social media in Surrey.

In a statement officers said it was an offence for anyone to "intentionally kill, injure or take any wild bird".

They also urged parents to look out for such behaviour on their children's social media after images appearing to show a dead duck, held by a boy with a catapult, appeared on Instagram.

In addition the force revealed it had confiscated several items following reports of similar incidents and suggested mums and dads should be "checking bags and bedrooms for paraphernalia."

Enquiries into the incident relating to the photos of the duck are underway.

Surrey Police added that if you witness anyone using catapults you are asked to call 999 immediately.
