Surrey "pothole capital of the UK", Hampshire second

It's been revealed that Surrey County Council had the most compensation claims for damage or injury as a result of potholes last year.

The county has now been dubbed the "pothole capital of the UK" following a Freedom of Information request by leasecar.uk.

Hampshire County Council didn't fare much better - receiving the second most number of claims.

In Surrey a total of 3,533 claims were made, in Hampshire that figure was 2,665.

As a result Surrey paid the most of all county councils in compensation in 2018/19 - with £323,222 being given to people who have suffered damage to their car or personal injury as a result of potholes.

Meanwhile Hampshire came 14th on the list of amount paid in compensation, shelling out £105,897.75.

A Surrey County Council spokesperson said:

“We have some of the country’s busiest roads and this naturally takes its toll but we’re working incredibly hard to improve Surrey’s roads.

"This is reflected in our increased investment, with an extra £92m announced this week in our capital budget for improving and maintaining our roads and pavements over the next few years.”

Hampshire County Council have been contacted for comment.
