Gales up to 70mph to hit Surrey and Hampshire

Surrey and Hampshire look set to be battered by gales as Storm Brendan sweeps towards the UK.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for wind on Tuesday from 12pm through to midnight.

Gusts of up to 70mph are expected along with heavy rain.

Forecasters say it could cause power problems, travel trouble and delays to public transport.

What to expect:

  • Some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport are likely.
  • Probably some bus and train services affected, with some journeys taking longer.
  • Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges likely.
  • Some short term loss of power and other services is possible.
  • It is likely that some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities affected by spray and/or large waves.

The wind warning covers all of Surrey and Hampshire.

Surrey and Hampshire's five day forecast:

Today:
It will be mostly dry and bright to start but with a few showers along coastal fringes. Winds will strengthen through the day. Outbreaks of rain will develop during the afternoon and become more frequent and widespread towards dusk. Maximum temperature 11 °C.

Tonight:
Locally heavy rain during the evening will slowly clear eastwards overnight. Clear spells will develop for a time towards dawn. Minimum temperature 6 °C.

Tuesday:
Tuesday will start dry and windy before further locally heavy rain arrives from the west by midday. Maximum temperature 12 °C.

Outlook for Wednesday to Friday:
Locally heavy rain at first on Wednesday. Thursday will be mostly dry and windy but with further rain later. Friday will be mostly dry and bright but with easing winds.
