Man jumps into River Wey following A3 police chase

Published by the Eagle Radio News Team at 1:09pm 7th January 2020.

A man has been arrested following a police pursuit on the A3 this morning (7 January).

It started after what officers described as "a routine stop check" on the route at Guildford at around 10am.

The driver of a grey Ford Focus was found to not have a valid driving licence and as officers approached the car, it made off.

Following a short pursuit he abandoned the car on the carriageway of the A3 at the Stoke Crossroads.

Officers used an "incapacitant spray" to try and stop the man but he continued running, eventually ending up in a wooded area in Stoke Road.

He was located shortly afterwards in the River Wey and was pulled from the water by officers.

During the pursuit the suspect’s car caused minor damage to three other vehicles.

Ambulance crews attended as a precaution but no one was injured during the incident.

The man is currently in custody and the investigation remains ongoing.
