Surrey babies in sponsored Brussels sprouts eating challenge

Published by the Eagle Radio News Team at 5:05pm 3rd December 2019.

A group of babies have taken part in a Brussels sprouts challenge for charity.

The babies, aged between six and nine months, tried Brussels sprouts for the first time to raise money for the Royal Surrey Hospital Charity's Closer to Care Campaign.

It supports premature and sick babies being treated at the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU).

The sponsored sprout eating challenge has already raised over £480 for the charity- the aim is to raise £500.

That money will deliver a new SCBU including comfortable overnight accommodation so parents are able to stay next to their babies' cots.

A separate family room for siblings to play and space for visitors to gather are also among the plans.

Alice, who's 6 months old, had mixed reactions

Event organiser, Cath Millman, took her six-month-old Alice (pictured above) to take part. She told Eagle Radio:

"As new mums and dads, those precious first few hours and days with our babies are still fresh in our minds. The NHS midwives and doctors are very caring, but nothing compares to being held and comforted by your own little family when everything is so brand new.

"Some of us have been directly affected by this issue, and we want to send a message of hope to all the new parents and their brave little sprouts at Christmas time and a big thank you to everyone who has sponsored us – your money will go directly to the Special Care Baby Unit.

"Hopefully by next Christmas, no one will have to spend those precious first nights apart from their sick or premature newborns."
