Free flu jab for most vulnerable

Published by the Eagle Radio News Team at 3:20pm 22nd November 2019. (Updated at 3:22pm 22nd November 2019)

Flu makes healthy people miserable - but for the elderly, the very young and those with some long-term health conditions it can be very dangerous.

The NHS are inviting millions of people in 'at-risk' groups to get themselves vaccinated against the virus - for free.

GP surgeries across North East Hampshire and Farnham have been taking the extra step of contacting people within those groups to arrange for them to take up the jab.

Details of who is eligible for a free vaccine can be found here.

Flu jab
Dr Hanne Hoff, a Clinical Director at NHS North East Hampshire and Farnham CCG and a GP in Crondall, has her flu shot.

Primary school children will usually receive the vaccine in the form of a nasal spray at special flu clinics at their schools, while parents of younger children will be invited to bring them to their GP surgery.

NHS North East Hampshire and Farnham Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) Clinical Chair Peter Bibawy says:

"Flu may be a common winter bug but that doesn’t mean we should take it lightly.

“It poses serious risks to many people whose immune systems are already weaker, which is why we ask people in certain groups, or their parent or carer, to have the vaccine.

“We can’t affect how severe the coming winter is going to be but getting vaccinated is one way of ensuring we’re properly prepared for whatever winter throws at us.

“I would urge anyone eligible for the free flu vaccine to contact their GP surgery - if they haven’t
already been contacted - to find out when they can have the jab."

Anyone who ISN'T eligible for a free flu jab can still get vaccinated at their local pharmacy for a small fee.

They will need to check the cost with the individual pharmacy and find out whether they need to make a special appointment or not.
