How a 'big garden shed' is combatting isolation in Church Crookham and Fleet

How a 'big garden shed' is combatting isolation in Church Crookham and Fleet

Published by Josh Kerr at 6:00am 22nd September 2019.

Found on the outskirts of Church Crookham, next to a field of allotments, is a workshop helping to bring people together.

The official opening of the “Church Crookham and Fleet Men’s Shed” will take place later today (22 September) at 1pm at their purpose-built facility in the SANG area just off Naishes Lane – with anyone welcome to attend and find out more.

Despite its name, the shed is open to just about anybody and allows people to carry out practical projects, such as woodwork, either individually or as a group.

Allen Walker, the shed chairman, said: “It’s basically a big version of what a lot of men will have at the bottom of their garden or at the back of their garage.

“The whole concept of Men’s Sheds is to provide a facility for people to get together, share skills, share resources and make things.”

Among the things the group have already made, prior to the opening of their new lottery funded purpose built “shed”, are mud kitchens for several local primary schools.

In fact, the majority of creations have been for the benefit of the wider community, who helped donate tools and machinery in the first place.

Their latest challenge is to build a device to help aid the mobility of a three-legged tortoise and the group their say they are open to taking on most projects, within reason, that people need a solution to.

Although open to anybody, the majority of the group’s members are retired men and Allen says getting involved in a shed is a great way to overcome the feelings of loneliness, isolation and frustration that many feel after the end of their working life.

He added: “Traditionally men are bad about talking, some of the best times have actually been when we’ve not been in the workshop – we’ve actually been sat on a bench outside just having a coffee and a chat.”
