Police warning after fake 'gun' spotted in Godalming

Published by Carol Musgrave at 11:54am 18th September 2019.

Police are investigating after they were called to reports of youths carrying a BB gun in Godalming.

Members of the public reported the incident in St Johns Street in Farncombe on Monday (September 16), but when officers arrived it turned out to be a toy.

Surrey Police say while owning a BB gun or replica gun is not illegal, it is a potential offence if they are displayed in public places and cause fear of violence  - carrying a maximum punishment of up to five years in prison.

If you have any information about the incident you can contact 101 quoting reference number PR/P19214186.

Meanwhile, officers say they rely heavily on the public to report all incidents to them - either to 101 or online.

They also say while more people are using social media to report crime, it is more effective to contact them directly.
