No-deal Brexit will “seriously hamper” Surrey Police, claims commissioner

No-deal Brexit will “seriously hamper” Surrey Police, claims commissioner

Published by Josh Kerr at 1:59pm 14th August 2019. (Updated at 9:21am 16th August 2019)

Surrey’s Police and Crime Commissioner says he is “becoming increasingly worried” about the impact of a no-deal Brexit on the county’s police force.

David Munro has written an open letter to all Surrey MPs saying that the UK crashing out of the EU without a deal will “seriously hamper” Surrey Police in its fight against crime.

He has urged the government to do all they can to avoid exiting the European Union on 31 October without a deal “for the sake of effective policing in Surrey”.

In the letter Mr Munro said a no-deal would see several key agreements disappear at a stroke, including intelligence networks, criminal records systems and cross boarder arrest warrants, making life for police in Surrey a much more challenging task.

However, he added that the county has spent an “enormous” amount of money to plan for a no-deal and avoid what he called “a complete melt-down” of uncertainty and possible unrest.

He said irrespective of the outcome Surrey Police will do “the best they can to carry on post-31 October” adding they “will probably be able to provide a reasonable service” should there be a no deal.

Mr Munro also revealed in the letter that officers from the county were preparing to provide substantial mutual aid to the port at Dover and that leave and rest days had already been canceled earlier in the year in case of a no-deal at previous Brexit deadlines.
